I did an audit on a rural high school a number of years ago and found 500 grams of sodium cyanide stored below the acid cabinet.
It happens because someone, sometime in the distant past got a deal on it. Cyanide solutions are (or were) frequently used in qual schemes. I used cyanide solutions in Gen Chem as a freshman (0.2 M NaCN). It was a highly-controlled, highly-supervised activity in a 6 or 7 week qual section in the Gen Chem laboratory. I recall the good Professor Herbener stating ‰??The only one doling out the cyanide is me, and I damn well better smell ammonia in that test tube before I give it to you!‰??
No school like the old school‰?|.
